November Words


Here are the vocabulary words for November!  The first set are the ones we will be working on in the placemats.  The second set are the same, they are just bigger.  Please work on these words with your children the next month!

Halloween Week!

Here is everything we did this week in KIWI, Miss Mary's class, and Miss Alissa's class!


Here's what we did in KIWI: 


We read this super cute book about Marley, the "bad" puppy!  The students loved talking about all of the naughty things Marley was doing.  If your child is in Mary's or Alissa's class, we didn't get a chance to read this, so I would get it from the library if you can!

In KIWI we also painted pumpkins!  Here is one that was a "Barbie Pumpkin."




The following is what we did in Miss Mary's and Miss Alissa's classrooms:
We played with these great palydough mats! I got these super cute ones from Tot Schooling.  It was a great way to get kids to request for colors, and it was a great way to learn some new Halloween vocabulary words.

We also worked on the following story.  I read the story to them, then after we answered questions.  It targeted a few of our monthly vocabulary words.

Once there was a farmer.  She was thinking about a spider. She wanted to go and find a spider.
First she looked on her farm, but she didn't see a spider anywhere!
After, she asked an owl.  She said "Have you see a spider?"  The owl said "No, sorry!"


Second, she asked a bat.  She said "Have you seen a spider?"  The bat answered, "No, sorry!"

Third, she looked in a spider web. There was a spider in the web!  The farmer was so happy she finally found a spider!


After we read the story, we played in the small world plays.  The students got to play with all of spiders and insects.  We talked about the insects getting stuck in the web.  It was a great hands on experience!

Pumpkin Patch Articulation

This week we did a fun articulation  activity!  Since we have been learning about pumpkins and vines, I made a little pumpkin patch.  The students had to come pick a pumpkin from the vine.  Then they had to tell us what letter was on the pumpkin, and the picture that was on the back.  We did "T" and "D" words since those are the sounds their class is working on.  They then had to put the pumpkin in the basket that had a "D" pumpkin, or the basket that had the "T" pumpkin.

Pumpkin Patch Small World Play

To go with the book "Apples and Pumpkins," I made a pumpkin patch small world play for my kids. It has a lot of the vocabulary words from the story.  In this first one, there is a family that is going to the pumpkin patch.  Here, we talked about a lot of actions and worked on following directions.  We also sorted all of the objects.  We put all of the leaves in a basket, then acorns in another one, and pumpkins in the third one. Here it is in action:

I also made another one that was in a bigger box.  With this small world play, I worked primarily on learning the vocabulary. I had the students find a specific object, and then find where it went on a paper that had the outline of all the objects:



I got all of my objects at a dollar store!  Let me know if you have any questions!




Apples and Pumpkins

Here is our book for the week!  I would suggest getting it from the library and reading it with your child.  We are doing "dialogic reading" with this book. Here is a great article that describes what dialogic reading is.  We are also using the following vocabulary words to go with the pictures.  Before we read the story, we will show them the pictures of the words and give them the definition.  Then we will all say the word together.  Here are the words with their pictures and the definition (I just used google images for these pictures).









Room on the Broom


This book is just too cute! We focused on the letter "w" with this book and talked about witches.  This website has lots of W words that we used to stress the sound.  There are so many fun activities that go along with it too.  The best part is that a lot of other bloggers and the Room on the Broom website have some for free! Here are the activities we did with this book:

For one center, we made this cute witch.  I had the students say some words that fit with their IEP goals. After they said some words, they got to add a piece to their witch.  The kids loved it and it helped keep them engaged with the activity!


For the second center, the students worked on articulation drill and worked on the worksheets for games from the following websites:

We also had the kids do a Story Retell with the pictures from the story.  We were able to get some data in conversation.

The best part of the day though was making these brooms!  I got the idea from this great blog.  Go there for the full instructions on how to make the brooms!





October Vocabulary Words

The following vocabulary words will be targeted this month:


Here are the same words, but larger.  You can print these out and do drill practice with your child.  Whenever there is downtime, you can hold up the pictures and ask "what's this?" Don't spend more than a couple of minutes a day!
